We depend on both spelling and context to activate relevant meanings and suppress irrelevant meanings in both oral and written language. Ambiguous words pose a greater challenge to students with language difficulties, and for all of us, learning about homophones builds our vocabulary and spelling knowledge in addition to our reading abilities.
